Abe's Salamander

Hynobius abei

Abe's Salamander is a small salamander of limited wetlands and streams in Kyoto and nearby areas. In spring it lays egg sacs in puddles and under leaf litter. The Kyoto site where it was first described is its type locality, and since habitat development has reduced its numbers, the type locality is a Natural Monument.
