Asian Hard Clam

Meretrix lusoria

The Asian Hard Clam is a bivalve of sandy-muddy river mouths and tidal flats, long tied to Japanese food culture and the shell-matching game. It has declined in many places through reclamation and water changes. At the Manose River estuary in Kagoshima it is protected as part of the tidal-flat community designated as a Natural Monument.
