Small Tortoiseshell
Aglais urticae
The Small Tortoiseshell is a brush-footed butterfly with orange wings marked in black. Its caterpillars feed on nettle-family plants. It lives in cool highland and mountain areas, and in Nagano Prefecture it occurs only in limited places, so it is protected along with its habitat.
