Diving Bell Spider

Argyroneta aquatica

The diving bell spider is Japan's only spider that lives almost entirely underwater, carrying air into a silk-spun chamber among water plants and living inside it. It eats prey and lays eggs there. Kyoto's Mizorogaike Pond, a wetland with relict ice-age life, has its biological community designated a Natural Monument, and this spider is part of it.
