Lancelet

Branchiostoma japonicum

The lancelet is a small, slender, fish-like animal that retains a notochord, the forerunner of the backbone, and is regarded as resembling the ancestors of vertebrates. It lives buried in clean sand, filtering plankton from the water. Habitats in Aichi and Hiroshima, with pure sandy seabeds, are Natural Monuments.
