Whip scorpion (Typopeltis crucifer)

Typopeltis stimpsonii

The whip scorpion is an arachnid that looks like a scorpion, with large pedipalps and a thin, whip-like tail, but it has no venomous sting. To defend itself, it sprays a sour-smelling liquid from the tip of its abdomen. It lives in damp places such as under leaf litter and stones, and its habitat in Amakusa, Kumamoto, is designated a Natural Monument of Kumamoto Prefecture.
