Bonin Dragonfly (Shimaakane)

Boninthemis insularis

The Shimaakane is a dragonfly endemic to the Ogasawara Islands, with reddish males flying around streams and pools. Its larvae develop in water. With limited freshwater on oceanic islands and pressure from invasive species, its numbers have declined, and it is protected as a Natural Monument.
