Tetsugyo (iron fish)

Carassius auratus

The tetsugyo ("iron fish") is an unusual form of crucian carp, named for its dark, iron-like color and notable for its long, flowing fins. Its origin is still debated. The habitat at Yutorinuma Pond in Kami, Miyagi, is a national Natural Monument, while habitats at Wakahata Pond in Obanazawa, Yamagata, and at Honenji Temple in Owase, Mie, are prefectural Natural Monuments.
