Atlas Moth

Attacus atlas

The Atlas moth is one of the largest moths in the world, with a wingspan of roughly 20 centimeters and wingtips patterned like snake heads. Adults have vestigial mouthparts and live off energy stored as caterpillars. In Japan it occurs on Yonaguni and neighboring islands, and both the species and its habitat on Mt. Urabu are Natural Monuments.
