Zenitanago (bitterling)

Acheilognathus typus

The Zenitanago is a bitterling found mainly in the Tohoku region, named for its rounded body that resembles an old coin. It lays eggs inside freshwater mussels during the breeding season. Once widespread, it has declined as waterways changed, and its habitat in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, is protected.
