About the Hooded Crane
The Hooded Crane is a medium-sized crane with a white head and neck and a dark gray body. It breeds in eastern Siberia and other areas and winters in Japan. Izumi in Kagoshima and Yashiro in Shunan and Kudamatsu, Yamaguchi, are well-known wintering sites, and both are Special Natural Monuments as cranes and their wintering grounds.
Natural Monuments related to the Hooded Crane →About the White-naped Crane
The white-naped crane is a large crane with white feathering from the back of the head down the neck, and it visits Japan in winter. It moves in pairs or family groups, feeding in paddies and wetlands. Izumi in Kagoshima is one of Japan's leading wintering grounds for this species and the hooded crane, and "the cranes of Kagoshima Prefecture and their wintering grounds" are a Special Natural Monument.
