About the Three-spined Stickleback

The Three-spined Stickleback is a small freshwater fish with three spines on its back; breeding males build nests of water plants and guard the eggs. It prefers cold, clear spring water, and landlocked populations survive at springs in northern Honshu. Habitats in Fukushima, Tochigi, and Fukui are designated Natural Monuments.
