About the Japanese Black-veined White (Miyamashirochou)

This medium-sized butterfly has white wings marked with bold black veins and lives in mountain meadows and woodland edges of central Honshu. Its caterpillars feed on barberry relatives and overwinter in groups. Habitats in Gunma, Yamanashi and Nagano are Natural Monuments, as the species has declined even in areas where it was once common.
