About the Wataka

The Wataka is a cyprinid freshwater fish that is unusual in feeding largely on water plants. It originally inhabited Lake Biwa and the Yodo River system. The populations in the mirror ponds of Todai-ji in Nara and Isonokami Shrine in Tenri, long resident there, are designated Natural Monuments.
