About the Oyanirami (Japanese Coreoperca)

The oyanirami is a freshwater fish about ten centimeters long with an eye-like spot on its gill cover, said to give it its name. It lives among plants and stones in slow rivers, and males guard the eggs. Its habitat in the Kuwano River, Tokushima, is a Natural Monument; the species occurs only in a limited number of western Japanese rivers.
