About the Iwame (landlocked masu salmon)

The Iwame is a stream fish regarded as a variant of the Yamame (masu salmon), with a distinctive appearance in which the usual side markings and black spots are almost absent. It lives in a very small number of mountain streams in Taketa, Oita, including the Sobo mountain area and the Ono River system. A habitat at Kohara in Taketa is a national Natural Monument, and the Iwame of the Sobo mountains is a Natural Monument of Oita Prefecture.
