About the Kuroiwa's Ground Gecko
Kuroiwa's Ground Gecko is a nocturnal, gecko-like lizard living on the islands of the Ryukyus. Unlike true geckos, it has eyelids and no adhesive toe pads. It hides in rock crevices or leaf litter by day and eats insects and spiders at night. Found on Okinawa Island and nearby islands, it is a Natural Monument because of its rarity.

Goniurosaurus kuroiwae orientalis is a subspecies of Kuroiwa's Ground Gecko with paler markings on its body. It occurs on a few islands of the Ryukyus and forages on the forest floor at night for insects. Island populations show their own traits, and because its range is small it is covered under the Kuroiwa's Ground Gecko Natural Monument.
